Thread machining tools
Threads play a key role in many branches of industry, especially wherever components need to be fastened together securely and permanently. Threaded connections are common in mechanical structures, cars, aerospace, electronics and many other fields. In this article, we look at different types of threading tools that are widely used in production.
Dies and taps
Dies and taps are tools commonly used in the threading process, creating a thread by cutting the material surface. Dies are used for threading external surfaces, while taps are used for internal holes, e.g. screw holes. Threading tools are made from various materials such as high-speed steel and cemented carbide, which gives them appropriate strength properties and more. Technar's offer includes, among others, Japanese Yamawa taps, which are very popular on the European market. The VU series tap from this manufacturer is a universal solution for aluminum, stainless steel and steel.
Thread forming taps
Unlike taps that create a thread by cutting, thread forming taps form it through a forming process. The resulting thread is considered more durable than one made with a cutting tap, but it can mainly be produced in unhardened materials. Thread forming is a chipless method used in precision machines, but the choice between cutting taps and thread forming taps depends on the specific project requirements, the type of material being machined and the complexity of the production process. Technar offers universal YAMAWA HP-RZ series thread forming taps, which can be used for machining various types of material.
Thread mills
Thread milling uses thread mills and is applied to large workpieces. It can only be performed on CNC machines with three-axis interpolation. The helical movement of the tool allows more flexible adaptation to different hole sizes and shapes. In thread milling tools, our offer includes high-quality products from Y.T.
Threading tools
Threading tools are special tools for turning threads. The cutting edges of threading tools are specially shaped to generate spiral grooves with the appropriate geometry. They can be coated with special coatings, such as cemented carbide coatings or ceramic coatings, which increase tool life, reduce friction and improve wear resistance. During the thread turning process, cooling systems are used to control temperature and improve tool life.
Summary
Thread machining can be performed using various methods, and the right tool depends on the selected method. This depends on various factors, such as the type of material being machined, thread type, dimensional tolerances, required precision and machine type.
